IP protection (Ingress Protection) is an international standard for measuring the dustproof and waterproof capability of electrical equipment enclosures. Take industrial control server as an example, in IP56 protection level, “5” indicates dustproof level (limited dustproof), and “6” indicates waterproof level (resistance to strong water spray), which should be tested according to IEC60529:2013 standard. It should be tested according to IEC60529:2013 standard.
II. IP5X Dustproof Test: Severe Verification of Sand & Dust Test Chamber
Test equipment and conditions
The dustproof test chamber places the industrial control server in a confined space to simulate a dusty environment. Test requirements:
Dust type: talcum powder or equivalent particles (diameter ≤ 75μm).
Dust concentration: 2kg/m³, continuous blowing for 8 hours.
IP protection level requirement: dust can be intruded in a small amount, but shall not affect the operation or safety of the equipment.
Judgment Criteria
After the test, no dust accumulates on the surface of circuit boards or heat sinks inside the industrial control server, and the normal function is passed.

Test equipment and parameters
Rain spray test chamber configured with 12.5mm nozzle, water flow (12±0.5)L/min, pressure 100kPa, water spray distance 2.5~3m.
Test time ≥ 3 minutes, covering all surfaces of industrial control server shell.
Judgment standard
After the test, open the cover and check that no water droplets penetrate into the interior (including seams, heat sinks and other areas), that is, to meet the requirements of IP56 protection level.

Reliability guarantee
The sand & dust test chamber simulates the dusty environment of industrial sites to verify the effectiveness of fan cooling, interface sealing and other designs.
The rain spray test chamber ensures the long-term stability of the equipment in humid or rainy scenarios through high-pressure water spray test.
Industry Adaptability
The industrial control server is certified with IP56 protection level, which can be deployed in metallurgy, chemical industry, energy and other environments with both high dust and humidity, and reduces the failure rate by more than 30% (refer to the data in the Industrial Equipment Reliability White Paper).
Design and Production Optimization
Test results can be fed back to the shell structure improvement (such as adding silicone seals), dustproof design of the cooling system, etc., to enhance product competitiveness.
Equipment requirements
Sand & Dust test chamber needs to have constant temperature and humidity function (such as 25 ℃ ± 3 ℃, humidity ≤ 50% RH), to ensure that the dust is evenly distributed.
Rain spray test chamber needs to support multi-angle spray (e.g. 0°, 90°, 180°), covering the complex shape of the industrial control server.
Test flow
Perform IP5X dustproof test first, and IPX6 waterproof test immediately after cleaning the equipment to avoid cross-interference.
The test requires real-time monitoring of the industrial control server temperature rise, power consumption and other parameters to simulate real load conditions.
Intelligent upgrade
Some sand & dust test chambers integrate AI vision system to automatically identify the dust intrusion path; rain spray test chambers are equipped with pressure sensors to draw real-time water pressure distribution map.
Standard Evolution
The new version of IEC60529:2024 will refine the details of IP56 protection level (e.g., allowing trace water vapor intrusion into non-critical areas), and promote the iteration of test equipment.
The IP56 protection level test for industrial control servers is verified by both dustproof and rain spray test chambers, providing critical reliability assurance for industrial automation scenarios. With the popularization of smart manufacturing and edge computing, IP protection level will become one of the core competencies of industrial control equipment.
